I want to introduce an anti-consumerist, non-profit and pro-environment organization The Adbusters Media Foundation, which was founded in 1989 by Kalle Lasn and Bill Schmalz in Vancouver. The organization consists of artists, activists, writers, students, educators, entrepreneurs; and all they want is to advance the new social activist movement fo the information age. The organization publishes the reader-supported, advertising-free activist magazine, Adbusters, whose aim is to challenge consumerism. They blame advertising because they believe that it plays an important role in creating consumer culture and that it colonizes public by appearing everywhere; in movies, sports, schools, magazines etc.
Adbusters, the magazine, states that advertising pushes people to look to external sources and it aims to provoke anti-consumerist feelings by juxtaposing texts and images. Some other activist actions that the organization use to raise the awareness are corporate boycotts and “art as protest” which includes humor. Billboard modifications, google bombing, flash mobs, fake parking tickets are included in those activist actions. Adbusters often challenge consumerism by culture jamming also, because culture jamming aims is a form of protest that challenges large, influential corporations that control mainstream media and the flow of information.Adbusters_98_American_Autumn_cover
