Pussy Riot

Pussy Riot is a Russian group of punk-rock. The group is founded by 3 feminist women: Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich. Pussy Riot exists since 2011. They organize unauthorized artistic performances in Moscow to take attention to female rights. In 2012, they  opposed to the election campaign of primer ministre Vladimir Putin.

They usually wear dresses and masks in their spectacles. They say that they are influenced by the Riot Grrrl movement of 90’s.

In 2012, 5 members of the grouindir (1)p staged a performance in Moscow cathedrale and 2 girls were condamned to 7 years of prison. After they went to prison, they became a highly recognized group and the Russian government took a lot of reaction. Famous bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sting stated that they supported Pussy Riot girls. European leaders were opposed to the verdict as well, Merkel said that this was an inappropriate situation for a country which is the member of European Council. At the end, a simple performance turned to be a huge political protest over Russia.

Pussy Riot is considered to be an example of “culture jamming” because they use the video clip -which is shown in mass media- to protest the government- which uses the mass media as well-. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova said on the day of trial that their motivates were exclusively political, which shows that they are a motivated, concsious and organized group.
