The Lone Ranger

In the documentary called “Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People”, Jack Shaheen talks about how Hollywood movies always shows Arabs as the villain which results in misjudgment in people’s mind. He also gives examples of how other races or ethnicities, like black people and Jews were once represented as others. Hollywood movie sector still uses other ethnicities as secondary or as the villain characters. “The Lone Ranger” is a Disney movie and it is a good example for what mainly Jack Shaheen makes a point in the documentary about “representing the other”.

This movie is about a masked white man named John Reid fights injustice in the American Old West with his Native American friend Tonto. The hero and the main character of this movie is John Reid; a good-looking, straight, white American male character, but on the other side, the Native American Tonto is a secondary character. Tonto’s duty in this movie is to be a helper in John Reid’s goal, which is to bring justice, after he was resurrected.

To be represented as the other and to be shown as a not equal human being to a white American man is very offensive for the people of a race or ethnicity. Unfortunately, in my opinion, I don’t think that this will ever change. Even if Jack Shaheen says that he is optimistic about this situation, I believe that there will always be a superior race in the world which will dominate the other races and represent them as “the others”.
