Doksanlar, or 1990s, is a Turkish TV series which portrays the Turkish family structure, Turkey’s political issues and the contrast between high and low-class people in 1990s. The photograph above is actually belong to an extended family. In the middle, we see “the father” Mustafa Bey. In the left side of the photograph, Mustafa Bey’s elder son, Nuri Bey is seen with his family. Nuri Bey is a contractor therefore he is wealthy and narrated as he belongs to the high-class. His wife, Şükran Hanım, is uncouth and always pranks with her husband’s money. She looks down on everyone who lives in the same neighbourhood with her except the ones who are wealthier than her. They are restless at home.

In the right  side of the picture, Mustafa Bey’s little son, Bekir Bey, and his family are shown. Bekir Bey is just an ordinary officer and described as he represents the lower class. He does not earn much; and yet, he does not think “money is everything”. He has a very intelligent wife, Sevinç Hanım, who is a very elegant woman even though she does not have money. She is polite, have good manners, cares about everyone and always tries to help others. Their home is peaceful and they are obviously pictured as happier than Nuri Bey’s family.

Doksanlar is a great example of Uğur Zeynep Güven’s article: “Social Class and Family On Screen:  Do Prime-Time Television Series ‘Create’ Images of Family in Turkey?”. In this article, she explains how Turkish television portrays high-class and rich people as unhappy and low-class, poor people enjoying life even though they do not have money. She emphasizes the damage given to Turkish society by reinforcing the high contrast between social classes. In my opinion, it is just a way to prevent mobility between social classes.
