In Uğur Zeynep Güven’s “Social Class and Family on Screen: Do Prime-Time Television Series ‘Create’ Images of Family in Turkey?” article, she gives examples of lower middle class family TV series from Turkey where father is the dominant character in the family and mother is the passive one. “Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman Ki” is an example which challenges some of Güven’s ideas. In this show mother is the one who takes care of her four children because the father ran away with a younger woman. The family in this show struggles with economic problems, family issues and also political issues that surrounded Turkey during 1970s and 1980s, but still they manage to survive from all of these problem because they face these problems as a big, strong family. Even though they been through a lot of painful events, the fact that they were a bounded family who loves each other no matter what reinforces the idea of Güven which indicates that lower class families are happier than upper class families. Also Güven talks about “fairy-tale” series in Turkey in her article. “Fairy-tale” romance means a rich man falls in love with a poor girl or vice versa. In “Öyle Bir Geçer Zaman Ki” one of the children Aylin who was a high school student at that time, fell in love with an older and richer man Soner. To watch a fairy-tale romance in TV gives people a hope that they can have a happy ending as they did.
