Masculinity means characteristics roles of men. The term of masculinity changes culture to culture. However, there is a specific definition of masculinity in popular culture that we can all see around us. The behaviours of men are controlling by society and popular culture. Their hair styles, their clothes, their walking and even speaking styles are all decided by the popular culture that represents the masculinity. They have to be aggressive, powerful, rich and strong to survive. If they do not, they are called ”loser”. They have to fight, protected the family and women, earn a lot of money which is considered ”being a man”. These terms are out of control and they’re seen in media all the time. They affect the men and women that they think this is an ideal man and they all have to be like this. I think this is humiliating for both men and women. Fighting, being dominant over women and being aggressive are all bad behaviours which we should not accept.
There are many examples of masculinity in popular culture. I wanna show the video and explain the lyrics of Rihanna’s Rude Boy which is an excellent example of traditional nations of masculinity.
We can hear the lyrics and the vision that women’s way of thinking of masculinity. Rihanna clearly states that men should be powerful, dominant, aggressive and they should have muscles which means they have to be strong. Also, they should be good at sex which is clearly the main point of the song with the lyrics ” Come here rude boy, is you big enough?”.
Tonight I’ma let you be the captain
Tonight I’ma let you do your thing, yeah
Tonight I’ma let you be a rider
I like the way you touch me there
I like the way you pull my hair
I like when you tell me ‘move it there’
which says man is controlling woman. Riding which is used with an animal in the video is an act for an object or animal, so men is riding women is over dominant which represents traditional masculinity. Pulling hair is also an aggressive traditional behaviour that represents masculinity.
There are many examples like that especially in music videos these days.
